I received this bulletin from DAVEY D today announcing a rally condemning the recently alledged physical attack on Jimmy Henchmen's (Czar Entertainment) son by rapper Tony Yayo from G-Unit. When I first heard of the incident, I was appalled that something like this could happen over some music industry beef. If true, we should not support anyone who attacks children. The kid is only 14 years old. Stop the madness...
Please circulate this, thank you.
Just Say NO To YAYO
GROWN MEN DO NOT ASSAULT CHILDREN

MC ROVE??!!!!
OK, I can admit this is some funny shit. BUT, one does feel uncomfortable seeing old white men, mocking hip hop. To make matters worse these are not just any old, white men. These are among the most powerful who just happen to be running the United States at the moment. Who is the lone black guy on stage coonin'? LOL

Dr Cornel West Teams up w/ KRS-One & Prince
From DAVEYD.COM:
LOS ANGELES – Aided by a stellar collection of artists unafraid to raise their voices in these challenging times, best-selling author, prominent scholar, socially-conscious intellectual, and academic philosopher, Dr. Cornel West conducts a virtual symphony of music and thoughts with the highly-anticipated release of “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations,” on Hidden Beach Recordings (HBR).
Because of his intellectual contributions, Dr. West is widely considered one of the most gifted and provocative voices of the 21st century. A renowned African-American scholar, he has authored several books including, the New York Times best seller, Race Matters (1993), which has sold nearly a half million copies and changed the course of America’s dialogue on race, justice, and democracy. The book is considered a contemporary classic.
Dr. West has won numerous awards, including the American Book Award, and has received 20 honorary degrees. He is currently the professor of religion at Princeton University.
Dr. West steps out of the classroom and into the studio to record “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations,” set to debut on HBR’s new Hidden Beach Forum label in June, during Black Music Month. The project brings together the voices of some of hip hop’s most progressive artists, including Talib Kweli, KRS-1, M1 of Dead Prez, Killer Mike, Rhymefest, Neo Abyss, Malik Yusef as well as musical giants, Prince, the late Gerald LeVert, David Hollister, and Chuckii Booker. Also, tracks on the CD include a riveting, scored-to-music debate on the many issues surrounding the use of the “N-word,” featuring Dr. West and radio, television and literary personalities Tavis Smiley and Dr. Michael Eric Dyson.
The brainchild of Black Men Who Mean Business (BMWMB) – that is, Dr. West, Mike Dailey and Clifton West – “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations” is a collaboration of three men from different generations, who came together in the grand tradition of our forefathers to be a voice of enlightenment and empowerment … by way of music. The BMWMB concept was originally brought to Dr. West by Dailey, a Sacramento, CA-based music writer and producer.
In using hip hop and R&B to enlighten and inform, Dr. West underscores the genres’ roles as a social force, possessing a power that resonates across boundaries. “It has the capacity to enact change not limited to the charisma of a single personality, but through exerting a voice rising from the enclaves of America’s chocolate cities and vanilla suburbs,” he said.
With hip hop music serving as a main backdrop for “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations,” Dr. West says the hip hop culture is now woven into the fabric of our nation; and moreover, it’s America’s “greatest export” in popular culture.
Said Hidden Beach Founder/CEO Steve McKeever: “Throughout history, particularly in troubled times, true artists have led the way in challenging injustice by using their talent to help bring attention to critical issues facing society. With this project, Dr. West allows artists to again be at the forefront of speaking out against unjust powers by skillfully conducting the voices of some of today’s most talented and intelligent performers into a symphony we all need to hear.
“We are blessed to have the compassionate, humble genius of Dr. West to help kick-off an important new corner of Hidden Beach, which will soon become a cornerstone of what we do,” added McKeever. “Like all material to be released on Hidden Beach Forum, we hope this project generates thought, debate, education and, ultimately, action in light the many societal ills we face today, and inspires everyday people to tap into their own greatness and join the effort for a better way of life for all of us.”

HIP HOP APPRECIATION WEEK 2007
I received this message from Minister Server at THE TEMPLE OF HIP HOP
announcing Hip Hop Appreciation Week which is an annual celebration of Hip Hop culture established by KRS One and The Temple of Hip Hop:
HIP HOP APPRECIATION WEEK 2007
Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s been Ten years since KRS-ONE and the Temple of Hiphop introduced the concept of HHAW to the Hip Hop community! Forever props to the “Teacha” for being the vessel to bring forward this divine idea from the Most High! Since 1997, HHAW has grown into to a yearly, worldwide celebration that keeps growing each year. During HHAW Hiphoppas from various walks of life, of all races, religions, class and creed, in cities, towns and villages from America to Australia, celebrate a week of Hiphop Kulture by having a variety of activities and events in their communities!
The Tenth Anniversary for Hip Hop Appreciation Week is May 13-20, 2007, the theme is “HONOR”! The goal of HHAW is to de-criminalize the images of our culture that are presented to the world by the mainstream media. HHAW is the week when Hiphoppas should amplify the work they’re doing in their community through Hiphop Kulture. Hiphoppas are encouraged to Honor Hiphop Kulture by making the Tenth Anniversary of HHAW the dopest, freshest, phattest, best celebrations ever, word!
Now is the time for Hiphoppas to get serious about the future of Hiphop Kulture! We need to get past the “personality” of our Hip Hop leaders and decide who we are as a Hiphop community, what we are doing and what we desire for our children’s children forever! As a unified international Hiphop Kulture, we truly have the ability to transform the world into what we desire it to be! HHAW is a great time to learn or re-affirm your appreciation, support and work for the development, growth and preservation of the international Hiphop Kulture through various activities and events in your community!
Here’s a few of “Minister Server’s Suggestions” on what would be dope to “Honor” during the 2007 Tenth Anniversary HHAW celebration:
1. It would be dope if during HHAW, Hiphoppas had events that honor the gifts and talents that the Higher Infinite Power Healing Our People, Hiphop, has given us and share those blessings with their community!
2. It would be dope if during HHAW, Hiphoppas worldwide used this time to really honor each other as Hiphop Kulture, a unified collective community of free, creative and productive people that are changing the world!
3. It would be dope if during HHAW, Hiphoppas worldwide acknowledge that May 16th is “Hiphop Independence Day” in honor of the day that Hiphop Kulture presented the Hiphop Declaration of Peace, to the United Nations in 2001!
4. It would be dope if during HHAW, Hiphoppas decided to honor the ancestors and pioneers that laid the foundation of our culture by having events to show people how Hip Hop culture evolved into the international culture that it is now!
5. It would be dope if during HHAW, Hiphoppas decided to honor people who are doing good work in our community with a special award for their service!
6. It would be dope if during HHAW, Hiphoppas decided to honor our youth by providing creative activities that allow them to express themselves through the elements of Hiphop Kulture!
7. It would be dope if during HHAW, BET, Vh1 and other media outlets decided to show videos and programs that de-criminalize the images of Hiphop Kulture!
8. It would be dope if during HHAW, more spiritual leaders, politicians, educators, parents, business and community members participate in some of the events during HHAW!
9. It would be dope if during HHAW, people gave honor to the elements of Hiphop Kulture by having workshops, classes and presentations about the origin and history of the elements of Hiphop Kulture!
Of course there are many more “Suggestions”, however, since Nine is the number of completion, I’ll stop right there for now! Have a great HHAW and remember, we are not doing hip-hop, we are Hiphop, word!

LONG LIVE THE KANE!
We are back in effect no doubt! (a little old school lingo for ya) Yes THE ZRO HOUR has arisen from its slumber and so much has happened in our absence. From the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina to the VH1 Hip Hop Honors and in between. This last quarter of the fiscal music year looks to be shaping up very strong as we await a slew of new releases from veterans and new jacks alike. The Roots are now signed to Def Jam Left, Kanye West stands up to George Bush, and Jay-Z is readying another concert. Speaking of Jay, be on the look out for him to grace the cover of FORTUNE magazine- DAMMNNN!
This show is actually a gem. Many of you slept on DJ AMBUSH’s KILLA RIDDIMZ CD so I wanted to present that as sort of a pre-show. We will be back in 2 weeks with an official jump off like we usually do so stay tuned. The VH1 Hip Hop Honors was incredibly dope and brought back the full wave of memories of an era that will reign supreme. LL COOL J, GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS 5, SALT & PEPA and KANE himself destroyed it! Kane is my personal favorite and strongest influence when it comes to MCs (equally with KRS ONE). In our exclusives section we have a classic battle between Kane and a Philly MC named Jazz Fresh. It’s a live performance with BIZ MARKIE and COOL V on the wheels. Shout out to MISTER K from South London on that one! Check the new JOE BUDDEN track that proves his storytelling prowess. Courtesy of FULLY LOADED RECORDS we have a joint from GUTTA feat. TRAGIC. Straight from Houston K-OTIX weighs in on the whole Bush administration Hurricane Katrina debacle. I hear some parts of the country are playing it while others have ignored it-they sum it up for me…
Lastly, be on the lookout for this project above. Two of the greatest in hip hop join forces for a crazy CD project.

THE ARCHIVE-07.13.05
THE ZRO HOUR is on hiatus for the rest of the summer due to traveling and taking an all around break. In the last few weeks we have lost another great legend of music- LUTHER VANDROSS. His death was met with a joyous celebration of his music represented by some of his greatest peers- CISSY HOUSTON, ARETHA FRANKLIN, STEVIE WONDER and DIONNE WARWICK among others. His incredible voice will never be duplicated but will influence generations to come.
Until we return in September, enjoy the great releases and tours this summer along with all the juicy scandals brought about by a certain groupie (I am not going to give her any promotion for that crazy book of hers). Check out BEING BOBBY BROWN to see some of the most ghetto fabulous displays of affection between Bobby and Whitney along with his attention getting antics. I am reserving my DVD now!
Peace

JL COTTER: The Album B4 The Album
J.L. Cotter is a 22 year old soul/ R& B artist hailing from Long Island, NY. He is the son of Robert Cotter, a musician that has played with the late Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers in a group known as The Big Apple Band (later known as CHIC). His musical roots run deep and are evident throughout this 19 track CD. From the texture of his voice to his lyrical content, his respect for good soul music is evident. Standout cuts such as FOR US, MAKE U CRY, JUST TELL HIM, and SHE LIKES IT put him in league with today’s current radio hits. Others such as PHONE CALL, BUSINESS AND PLEASURE, and KASUAL/NIGHT CLUB SCENE felt like filler material. The CD also features a guest appearance by MOS DEF on EAST SIDE. The production throughout is top notch so it will be a matter of time before radio responds. All in all, J.L. presents a strong outing full of passionate vocals and subject matter. With some fine tuning, we should be hearing a lot more from J.L. Cotter in the near future.
**UPDATE**
JL Cotter (Jared Cotter) was on of the original 24 finalists on American Idol this 2007 season. Although he was eliminated a few weeks ago he is still a strong talent to look out for...

JL Cotter (Jared Cotter) was on of the original 24 finalists on American Idol this 2007 season. Although he was eliminated a few weeks ago he is still a strong talent to look out for...
THE ARCHIVE-LADIES FIRST 05.14.05
This week on THE ZRO HOUR we salute the female rappers and MCs who paved the way for the LIL KIMs and FOXY BROWNs of today. We take you through some of the most influential songs and flows. How can we forget YO YO, BOSS, SWEET TEE & JAZZY JOYCE, and ANTOINETTE to name a few? Well if you did, check the show and get familiar (sorry Clinton Sparks). THE ZRO HOUR also features an interview with co-host PROPHECY. PROPHECY has been featured on the show in the past. Check the UNSIGNED SHOWCASE for a display of her skills. She blessed us with a new freestyle on the show.
The ladies of Hip Hop have much to say and contribute to the culture. From the first known all female rap group, MERCEDES LADIES (1979), to SEQUENCE and SHA ROCK from the FUNKY FOUR PLUS ONE, the impact has been felt ever since. There are so many that don’t get much shine or recognition such as MICHIE MEE from Toronto, SPARKY DEE, NIKKI D and even presently JEAN GRAE.

El Extremes Electric Cabaret:
SPIC CHIC: the musical
S.panish P.eople I.n C.ontrol
Passionate Art
by EDAYE
Although I am familiar with his work and THE ZRO HOUR now features a section dedicated to exposing many of our listeners to his work, I had not seen EL EXTREME and his NEW EDGE THEATER troupe perform. This past Friday, May 6th, I went to see El Extreme at the WINGS Theater in the West Village section of Manhattan. Although it was a cold, rainy night, a small crowd of the faithful made it down to see and hear from one the most creative and passionate poets our diverse city has to offer. We actually were there during the recording of an audio and DVD project to be published in the near future. El Extreme's ELECTRIC CABARET took us on a reflective journey through the experience of living in the barrios of NYC. Not just environmental conditions but the energy and vibe of the residents. El Extreme flowed between characters and personas so effortlessly while commanding your attention with the various inflections of his rich voice.
Primarily spoken in English, his words would also resonate in Spanish. My understanding of espanol may not be fluent but the emotion of his presentation kept me following along. El Extreme's performance was framed by the musical talents of Brian Tully on bass, Adam Amram on conga, and guitarists Kee Kee Elvis and Paul Decoster. The musical backdrop consisted of jazzy, latin textures subtly adding the right ambience to the power of his voice. During his performance, he was joined onstage by the beautiful and sexy poetess MARIA HERNANDEZ aka LOLA MAGDALENA, Latin King poet and MC, EL DAVID and reggaeton singer, LUNA FINA. Maria Hernandez presented a sexually charged monologue about pride, self respect and self love. Her pauses between lines allowed your brain to spin, contemplating what was previously spoken. El David delivered a powerful spoken word/rap on the anguish of dealing with racism and poverty while maintaining self pride. Reggaeton singer, Luna Fina gave a performance full of rapid fire wordplay allowing a preview of what's to come from this upcoming artist.
El Extreme with New Edge Theater presented one of the most polished, passionate performances that I had seen in some time. It will not be long before recognition catches up with their art. Stay tuned to THE ZRO HOUR and check the site often for more of his work and info on current performances.

THE ARCHIVE-03.15.05
This month marks the anniversary of the death of the Notorious B.I.G. (March 9th to be exact) and that day saw a truce between THE GAME & 50 CENT. Many people felt that it was bogus but the attempt to cool the environment are appreciated. We don’t need another foolish death over music & business. We also lost another cherished artist- LYN COLLINS. LYN COLLINS was a protégé of James Brown and much of her work has been sampled in the past. She died of heart failure at the age of 53.
This week’s show is very special in that we finally make THE ZRO HOUR available to download to your iPOD and other media devices. There is a new movement called PODCASTING which enables the automation of downloads whenever this site is updated. Check out the link to the left for more info and direct downloads!
ENJOY THE SHOW and check us next week for

THE ARCHIVE-50 vs. GAME …and its GETTING UGLY! 03.01.05
I am sure many of you have heard about the shooting outside of New York’s HOT 97 radio once again. First entourages of LIL KIM and FOXY BROWN a couple of years ago now one of 50’s crew gets shot in the leg after 50 finished an interview with Funkmaster Flex . In that interview he denounced GAME and said he was cut from G-UNIT. 50 Cent has been claiming lately that Game’s album was largely driven by 50’s writing and direction. He is also disappointed with Game’s position concerning industry beefs. GAME was at the studio earlier that night and was being interviewed on another station, Power 105 (also a NY station), when 50 was on the air calling him out. We don’t know if it was directly linked but more is to come. We are witnessing another ugly episode in the realm of Hip Hop. I do not anticipate hearing about another death of one of our artists. Unfortunately, the atmosphere between these two lends itself to chaos. Whether Game is involved or not, we hope that the situation will be settled without further gunplay.
UPDATE
Apparently, the man that was shot was not a part of 50’s crew but a resident of Compton, Los Angeles. He may possibly be a member of GAME’s camp. The shooting occurred after Game tried to enter the building where HOT 97 was broadcasting 50’s interview…more to come.

Actor and activist, OSSIE DAVIS. Beloved husband of actress and fellow activist, RUBY DEE. OSSIE DAVIS has a huge presence in the fabric of African- American culture. THE ARCHIVE-DOUG E. FRESH TRIBUTE 01.10.05
HAPPY NEW YEAR !
We return with our first new show of the year ….its actually the last show of 2004 that was never posted (due to the holidays and vacation). There will be an official first show of the new year coming next week. Shout out to Cliff Monroe…
THIS WEEK ON THE ZRO HOUR we salute hip hop's first and original human beat box DOUG E. FRESH. DOUG E. FRESH is an innovator and represents an integral component of Hip Hop culture. Born in Barbados, Doug became known in the early eighties at clubs and block parties in Harlem and the Bronx for his unique expression of Hip Hop. For many, his first appearances on record and film ("The Original Human Beat Box", 1983 Vintertainment records and the movie "Beat Street") solidified their curiosity. The success of the FAT BOYS, with Buffy on the beat box, did not distract Doug's fans. He cemented his place in history with the classics "The Show" and "LA DI DA DI" with Slick Rick, Chill Will, and Barry Bee comprising the Get Fesh Crew. Shortly after parting ways with Slick Rick, he followed with the album "OH MY GOD" in 1986. The album produced the hits "All the Way to Heaven" and "Play this Only at Night". His successive albums include "The Greatest Entertainer" 1988, "Doin What I Gotta Do" 1992, and "Play" 1995, generating the singles, "Keep Rising To The Top", "Bustin' Out", and "Freaks" w/LIL VICIOUS respectively.
Today DOUG E. FRESH is still very active touring around the world and appearing in many collabos with current Hip Hop artists. He recently won the SOURCE HIP HOP PIONEER award this past December. Doug is possibly the most consistent and beloved figure within Hip Hop that has transcended its beginnings yet still remains true to the essence of his own creativity. Not many "Old School" artists can still command a crowd or level of admiration from their peers that Doug retains. Log on and check out THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER!

This week we premiere two incredible tracks by the late ODB. One produced by DJ PREMIER and the other by the RZA off the BLADE : TRINTY soundtrack. Back on the scene is ED O.G. and PETE ROCK with a joint off of their joint album project. We also got some new ones from SNOOP DOGG, EMINEM, NAS, LUDACRIS and M.F. DOOM. Who is M.F. DOOM? Well he is a founding member of 90’s rap group KMD and brother of ZEV LOVE X (also a member) who sadly passed away before their second album saw the light of day (many years later, the album that is). M.F. DOOM has continued over the years and has an impressive catalogue of highly creative, self produced underground classics. THE ZRO HOUR brings you a taste from his current jump off MM..FOOD
