NEW! THE ZRO HOUR Podcast S06E12- MOS DEF: Def Poet

THE ZRO HOUR is back with a new episode devoted to one of the most diverse artists in hip hop, MOS DEF. Mos Def is an amazingly gifted emcee, poet, actor and musician. Be it the broadway stage, silver screen, recording studio or smoky club, Mos has always challenged expectations with his craft. His lyrics are laced with wit, insight and an outspoken candor. Mos Def can be bohemian and hood at the same time. He has collaborated with many of his idols and peers and their reverence for his lyricism is duly noted. I have selected some of his best solo tracks as well as some of the hottest collabos and freestyles. One selection of note is his live performance of "Quiet Dog", a song featured on his current CD "THE ECSTATIC". The live set was taken from a recent "Late Show with David Letterman" where Mos played the kettle drums and rapped simultaneously, never losing the beat.

Mos' film and television roles showcase his confident acting ability. He makes you forget that this is the same "true school" artist that rocks with Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Pharoahe Monch, The Roots, The Black Keys and many more. This show was a long time coming and I guarantee that you will rock this on "repeat"!

The official music video for "History" by Mos Def featuring Talib Kweli, off the album "The Ecstatic". I am looking forward to that Reflection Eturnal and a new Black Star project possibly due this year!

VIDEO: Current Music Presents: Embedded with Mos Def in Japan

From CURRENT TV:

On this special hour-long Embedded, Mos Def takes us on an all access seven-day tour of Japan while he performs his new album "The Ecstatic" to packed venues in Tokyo and Osaka. During that week, he hits up the Harajuku fashion district, whoops it up at a sumo wrestling match, and gets a personal tour of the Tokyo Giants stadium from his friend and baseball phenom Mark Kroon. Then, he brilliantly ties it all together by divulging the history of great thinkers known as "ecstatics," showing that he is clearly one of the most insightful men in hip-hop.

MOS DEF New Album "The Ecstatic" Out Today

Emcee, actor, poet and activist, MOS DEF, releases his 4th studio effort "The Ecstatic". "The Ecstatic" features minimal guests (Slick Rick, Talib Kweli & Georgia Anne Muldrow) and production by Madlib, J Dilla and OhNo among others. It is a sharp return to form for Mos Def with cutting, socio-political rhymes and insightful, almost spiritual themes. Make no mistake, Mos is at his finest with delivery, cadence and lyrical dexterity. Standout tracks include "Superamgic", "Casa Bey", "Auditorium" (feat. Slick Rick), "Priority" and "Pistola". "The Ecstatic" showcases Mos as he expresses his love for the craft and steadily explores new soundscapes.

VIDEO: CLASSIC Roundtable Interview w/DMX, Canibus, Mos Def, John Forte, Big Pun & Mic Geronimo

I have seen this picture many times but I have always wondered when it was taken and what was the purpose of these emcees for being at the same table. I always assumed it was a tour photo from the early days in the careers of Mos Def, Big Pun, DMX, John Forte and Canibus. Thanks to the blog at LOUD.COM we can watch the video of this incredible gathering. The meeting was set up and filmed for a street DVD release named "Shades Of Hip Hop". Writer, and now television host, Toure conducts the interview with these greats of hip hop. They all discuss their motivation, the creative process and industry politics as usual. The video is presented in seven parts with the first three posted below.

VIDEO: Let's Get Free: The Black August Hip Hop Project

The Black August Hip Hop Project strives to promote human rights though supporting and influencing the global development of Hip Hop culture. By facilitating exchanges between international communities where Hip Hop is a vital part of youth culture, they promote awareness about the social and political issues that affect our global communities. Their vision is to bring culture and politics together and to allow them to naturally evolve into a unique Hip Hop consciousness that informs our collective struggle for a more just, equitable and human world. This film documents the movement through a series of interviews and performances with hip hop artists and key members of the black activist movement.
