VIDEO: "THE REVIVAL"- Women In Hip-Hop Tour Documentary

The Revival (Europe, 2009, 17 min).

The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It shows the exchange of lessons between them and up-and-coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps, and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters.

Interesting report from CNN about a bi-racial, Chinese woman who recently competed on a chinese version of an "Singing Idol" competition. Public comments stemming from her appearance became nasty and insensitive. Although Lou Jing was subjected to racist criticism, she still enjoyed a great deal of support from the viewing audience.

I set things off with a classic, rare recording from 1986-87 of DOUG E. FRESH & SLICK RICK performing "Treat Her Like A Prostitute". Slick Rick recorded a version of the song on his album "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" but I drop the best version of this club classic. ETERNIA calls in before I drop her first new track since 2007, "Foul Child". The show also features new tracks by FRSEH VETZ (Dashah & DJ PAUSE), CYMARSHALL LAW, JASIRI X, METHOD MAN & REDMAN and KEITH MURRAY & CANIBUS (Undergods) grace the show as well as classics from the FAT BOYS and MAIN SOURCE. Dashah, who was previously featured on an episode of THE ZRO HOUR and on the promo release THE ZRO HOUR: Respect the Architects Vol. 1, has released this new project with long time collaborator DJ Pause. Dashah says, "The direction of this album is sick beats and dope rhymes. We wanted to take It back to the basics because that's what we feel is missing right now. The sound on Vet Status is a lot more fresher than Rap Burgular 2.5. It's not as nostalgic and underground as people may think. We tried some different things on this, but kept in the realms of who we are and for the most part hip hop. This album definitely has an old school feel to it while at the same time still being able to compete in today's formulated climate." DJ Pause adds, "With this album, we wanted the production to sound a little harder than Rap Burglar 2.5. Also we wanted a to pay homage to Hip Hop and have an old school feel as well. We tried some new styles and sounds with Vet Status but still kept it us and what we represent. Dashah stepped it up on the mic too."
