THE ZRO HOUR is back with a tribute to one of the most talented, pioneering and trendsetting emcees- GRAND PUBA. Grand Puba has long had legendary status with over 20 years in hip hop. From message driven raps centered around the philosophy and teachings of the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths, to party jams that stay on repeat, Grand Puba has long been a favorite of fans and peers alike. Puba has lengthy production credits dating back to his work with Positive K and has always produced music for his own projects. He has returned to recording and dropped a 4th solo album this year titled "Retro-Active". I had the pleasure of meeting and briefly interviewing him this summer at his listening party in NYC.



This episode is absolutely one of the best as I am proud to present some of Grand Puba's best work. Enjoy the show!

I was able to speak with Grand Puba for a few minutes during his listening session at Frank's Chop Shop in NYC for his new album "RETRO-ACTIVE". We build on his early contributions and his reasons for wanting to drop new music again after several years away from the scene. Puba's album, "RETRO-ACTIVE" is out today, June 23rd, on Frank Radio/Babygrande records. It features appearances by Sadat X, Rell. Lord Jamar, Kid Capri, Q-Tip, Talee, Sarah Martinez, Khadija Mohammed, Big Phil and Tiffani Davis. Production is largely handled by PHD & Grand Puba with tracks by Large Professor and Q-Tip respectively. Grand Puba laces the CD with his tested formula- party tracks, punch lines & wisdom. Stand out tracks include the first single, "This Joint Right Here" w/Kid Capri, "How Long?", "It Is What It Is" and "I See Dead People" w/Rell & Lord Jamar.

GRAND PUBA Drops New Double A-Side Single, Album Release Pushed to June 23rd

One of the founding members of Brand Nubian and a seminal artist in hip-hop in his own right, Grand Puba drops a double A-Side single off of his new album "RetroActive" which hits stores June 23rd, on FrankRadio/Babygrande Records. "This Joint Right Here" Featuring Kid Capri is straight fire. With a beat reminiscent of 1980s era "White Lines," and the up-tempo lyrics of Kid Capri, Grand Puba is in top form on this track. Adding his skills on the boards, Puba produces in addition to lacing the song with his signature style, unmistakable voice and one-of-a-kind delivery.

Puba has been spitting since he was 11 years old. The cover image was extracted from his father's Super-8 home video and shows Puba rhyming as a shorty. From there he would make his debut with Masters of Ceremony, and then move on to found the legendary group Brand Nubian. Grand Puba's new album, "Retroactive" will be released on June 9th 2009.
