Justin BUA: Legends of Hip-Hop
Celebrating Urban Culture and The Legends of Hip-Hop
One-Night Exhibit: Friday, November 12, 2010
House of Art gallery is pleased to present Legends of Hip-Hop, a solo exhibit of the art of Justin BUA, the author of The Beat of Urban Art and Legends of Hip-Hop (2011). The gallery will be showing original paintings of BUA's Hip-Hop greats. He will also be unveiling his most recent paintings, "Biggie", "Jay-Z", "Nas" and "Slick Rick". "Biggie" is also a limited edition giclee print available exclusively at House of Art.
BUA’s art represents the lives of the revered and the marginalized, the heroes and the underdogs of his time—New York City during the 1970s and ’80s. In his second book, Legends of Hip Hop, due out in 2011, BUA will delve deeper into the history of Hip Hop and pay homage to the greats of the culture.
BUA says of his art, “My work portrays the underground urban world - its music, dance, politics, history, emotion, and cultural importance – artwork for the people, of the people and by the people. Like Rembrandt and Goya’s depictions of both the aristocracy and the outcasts of society, I document both the icons of my time and society’s marginalized, each, with equal reverence. It is not only a statement about the ghetto economies and the plight of those living in the projects, but the will, the creativity, and the rich culture that has been born from the inner-city. I celebrate the urban experience.”
House of Art is located at 373 Lewis Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 1123. The gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, noon to 7 p.m.; and via appointment. Catalogue and digital images are available. Private viewings are available upon request. RSVP contact Richard Beavers at 347-663-8195, email: rbeavers@nychouseofart.com.
