Feds Shut Down File Sharing Site MEGAUPLOAD...and The CEO Is SWIZZ BEATZ???

Multi-Platinum producer/rapper Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) was revealed to be the CEO of MEGAUPLOAD, one of the internet's largest file sharing websites, after news broke yesterday that the Justice Department of the United States seized $50 million dollars in assets and shut down the site. Megaupload boasted over 50 million visitors daily and may have had up to 150 million registered users. Indictments from the grand jury accuse seven of Megaupload's operators (including former CEO Kim Dotcom) of racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and other charges. Swizz Beats was not among those indicted. Swizz may be a recent player within Megaupload and more information is forthcoming. Swizz beats is married to R&B singer/songwriter Alicia Keys. Although many are looking forward to this year as being one of doom, destruction, and possibly salvation, it is a new era in all of our lives filled with unlimited possibilities. As I reflect on this past year, I am proud of my work with BBOXRADIO.COM as it has allowed me to reinvigorate the presence of THEZROHOUR online and has increased our public exposure. The staff and team of volunteers at BBOX have produced a new outlet for independent radio right in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn. We have a ton of work to do to make a grander impression in 2012 but the launch this past Summer has been an event filled one to say the least.

DJ Ambush has returned to the fold and we are killing it every week while providing a gateway into the sounds of the ever evolving independent hip hop scene. We have a new member on the team, "Wyteboy" Chris, who I have long been mentoring yet he also inspires me to stay focused while providing insight into the current pulse of the streets. Old alliances have come into play (shout out to Dr. Bob Da Surgeon) and my personal focus on production has increased so stay tuned for new music coming out of the SIX ZRO camp (shout out to Audio Knox, Safari & Dango). I have one other project in the wings but it is still being developed and more news will be forthcoming in due time (shout out to Alexie F.).

Thanks for following, listening and supporting THEZROHOUR since 2004. We don't stop..

Beloved Rapper Heavy D Dies At 44

It saddens me to have to report something like this. Actor, rapper, record producer, singer Heavy D inspired and touched the hearts of many through genuine character, raw talent and showmanship. Jamaican born, Heavy D aka Dwight Arrington Myers (May 24, 1967 – November 8, 2011) also hailed from the same family that gave the world iconic hip hop veterans Pete Rock and Grand Puba. He inspired the "Large and In Charge" men of the world to be more confident in their appearance and be viewed as ladies men. There was a reason that Biggie shouted Heavy D out in his classic aspirational song "Juicy". Heavy D has departed before he had a chance to fully share his new album "Love Opus". ABOUT THE SHOW

When BBOX Radio approached Chris Rini about putting this evening together, the initial intent was to create laudatory works, based on a shared history in music and borough. After picking two iconic images, it became apparent that there was a sad, prophetic vein in each of them. They're more somber than their predecessors, no doubt because even the artists themselves are no longer young. The Beastie Boys are now elder statesmen of a genre and this reckless, casual violence would normally be written off as the folly of youth. In a perverse, life imitates art moment, their 80's dystopia full of cash and cocaine is more reminiscent of current events. The color palette was chosen as an allusion to old sepia photography, and implies that this is "ancient" history, doubtless to be forgotten and repeated.

"Ready" is even more stark in that it's original intent has come full circle. This album signifies the shift in a genre's themes & production style from the 80's to the 90's. It is also the breakout album of one of the greatest hip hop artists. That it should loom so large in his catalog is a sad reality. This piece is meant to be more of a tombstone than album cover. Juxtaposing the iconic baby with Wallace's dates of birth and death let the viewer ruminate on both their own memories along with B.I.G.'s legacy.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Christopher Rini is a contemporary artist living and working in NYC. He works primarily in wood stain, using figurative, iconographic and architectural imagery to explore the way inanimate objects and moments in time gain significance in our lives. Memory is seen as a defining piece of our experiences and identities, yet something that can never perfectly be shared. His next show will be an installation piece at the Art Bar in Manhattan this coming December.

Christopher Rini was born in Queens, NY and received his BFA, Fine Arts, from Hunter in 2001. He also received three full fellowship grants to the Vermont Studio Center from 1999 to 2001. He has produced work both for private collectors and for use in commercial spaces.

Frequent listeners of THEZROHOUR podcast and readers of the blog know that I always feature the best female emcees on the scene. Haitian born Farrah Burns got next. She began her performance career headlining in New York City hot spots like Joes Pub, SOB's, Knitting Factory, APOLLO, South Paw, Galapagos, Canal Room, Webster Hall, Lyricist Lounge and Philadelphia's own Mecca for soul performances Black Lily.

I first heard Farrah Burns at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, New York some time back. I was impressed with her flow and stage presence but forgot to seek her out. Flash forward to a few weeks ago and her video for the brilliant song "Shotgun Wedding" came my way and I was blown away by her neck snapping track. I was watching the late news tonight when this came in. Very sad to hear that we lost another of our greatest talents from the world of music. Nick Ashford, known for his collaborative songwriting and group with his longtime wife Valerie Simpson, passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 69. Nick and Valerie were two of the most prominent and successful songwriters at Motown. With hits like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," along with "You're All I Need To Get By", the duo cemented their legacy. Nick and Valerie also wrote and produced hits for Chaka Khan ("I'm Every Woman"), Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Teddy Pendergrass and Diana Ross. They also owned several restaurant/clubs, including the 20/20 on W. 20th St. and the Sugar Bar on W. 72nd St.in New York City.

DANNY BROWN Releases "XXX"

After doing some online digging last year, I came across a site that listed 10 emcees to watch for in 2011. Danny Brown immediately caught my attention. There was a sample of his track "Re-up" and his first line threw me: "I used to get domed up by crackheads..." The production was WU-ish and the lyrics grimy and unapologetic. I rushed to download his street LP "The Hybrid" and later started telling peeps that this dude was the truth!

Flash forward to this year's release "XXX"(30). Danny Brown, now signed to DJ A-Trak's label Fool's Gold Records, returns with his first full length project since "The Hybrid". In between he has appeared on Black Milk's "Album Of The Year" and Random Axe's (Sean Price, Black Milk and Guilty Simpson) debut album. I can't front, I was feeling "meh" when it came to the idea of pursuing ownership of Apple's iPad. I prefer the MacBook but with the phenomenal work developers are doing with the iOS, the iPad is becoming a musical force to be reckoned with.

I originally saw this video at one of my "secret stash" blogsites, MATRIXSYNTH. MATRIXSYNTH is one of the most informative recording gear websites that focuses on classic and new synthesizers, drum machines and assorted midi devices for the collector and musician looking for a unique piece of kit. The TableDrum app by Dohi Sweden is the perfect solution for turning table top drumming into a usable drum arrangement. I was blown away by how simple yet responsive the app appears in the video above. For $.99, its worth at least a demo session which may lead to the next backbeat of a future hit song. NYPD Assaults Several In Crowd After Pete Rock & Smif-N-Wessun Album Release Party

Last night following a successful and peaceful album release party, members of the NYPD were involved in several scuffles with people departing the venue. Pete Rock and Smif-N-Wessun celebrated the release of their upcoming album "Monumental" at Tammany Hall in NYC. After what many reported to be a peaceful show and party, police officers moved to immediately vacate the area causing tensions to rise and several assaults between bystanders and officers were captured on video. BOOKS: THE BOOMBOX PROJECT By Lyle Owerko

On last Saturday's broadcast of The Underground Dugout, I reviewed photo-journalist Lyle Owerko's ode to a bygone era- "The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music and The Urban Underground". One part coffee table book, one part historical text and 100% Hip Hop, "The Boom Box Project" is Lyle Owerko's labor of love. Mr. Owerko fascination with the boombox, its status in urban culture and vital component of early hip hop is explored throughout this book. From interviews with Kool DJ Herc, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, The Clash and Rick Rubin among others (with a foreword by Spike Lee), the boombox is elevated to its rightful place in pop culture.

During the 1970s and 1980s, it was common to see many people hoisting these sound systems on their shoulders and in their hands sometimes requiring two people to carry them. Often times the freshest music was heard through these portable stereos and they provided the backdrop for many b-boy performances. Lyle Owerko combed the world for some of the rarest and forgotten models and photographed them as pieces of art. This book is a must have for those who remember that era and for those who appreciate the foundations of urban culture.

BAMcinemaFest is hosting the world premiere of "Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer", a new documentary directed by Charlie ahearn ("Wild Style"). Brooklyn-born photographer Jamel Shabazz documented the pioneers of music and style in his books "Back In The Day", "A Time Before Crack" and "Seconds Of My Life". Ahearn, director of the seminal Wild Style, pays tribute to both Shabazz and those who defined hip-hop before it had a definition. More than just vintage shots of kids rocking Puma Suedes, Kangols, and pin-striped Jordaches in Times Square and Fort Greene Park, Shabazz’s photographs have hundreds of (often times tragic) stories behind them, and Ahearn gives voice to these images with dozens of interviews with Shabazz himself, graffiti pioneer and hip-hop historian Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite, legendary rapper KRS-One (both Brooklynites), and more.
